Humphrey’s Peak is the highest point in Arizona. The hike is not difficult and well worth the trip.
My trip to the peak was an absolute blast. I’m going to share with you how to prepare for your Humphrey’s Peak hike.
Getting to Humphrey’s Peak
Humphrey’s Peak is in the Kachina Peaks Wilderness of Coconino National Forest. The towers above the horizon north of Flagstaff, Arizona.
We camped the night before and got a hotel room for the night after our hike. You’ll likely want to do the same. Flagstaff is just minutes from either trailhead.

There are several routes you can take to hike the peak. We took a two day path from Locket’s Meadow. However, most people do the day hike from the ski resort trail head.
Day hike trail head
The day hike starts at the ski resort parking lot. It’s 4.76 miles up to the peak and a 3,378 foot climb to 12,575 feet. It will take you most of the day.
Overnight hike Trail head
I took the two day route from Lockett’s Meadow campground to Humphrey’s peak. This route is 7.59 miles to the peak and 4,357 foot climb.
The road to Lockett’s Meadow, where the trail head and a campground is, is a dirt forest service road. It’s well maintained but best traveled in a SUV or truck. You might make it back in a car but could scrape in a few spots.
You can read more about my friend Mark and I’s two day hike to the peak HERE. The views are spectacular and worth the drive even if you decide to forego the hike.
Nearby is the town of Sedona as well as the Grand Canyon. Both are excellent trips you must make in Arizona.
Let me know if you decide to make this trip. I’d be happy to answer any questions you might have.
