When I moved here in 2009 there was little in the Vail area. There was no place to shop without travelling into Tucson. That’s all changed. Vail now has two shopping complexes. Between these two you can handle your banking, grocery shopping, and everyday needs without traveling into Tucson. They have a hospital now as well so really all your needs are taken care of.

You’re only minutes away should you need to commute to Tucson, . Access to I-10 is quick where you can reach any part of Tucson as though you lived in Tucson itself. This is why many career professionals working in Tucson, call Vail their home.

Brief History of Vail Arizona

Empire Ranch in 1890s

Walter Vail moved to Arizona in the late 1870’s. Walter, originally from Nova Scotia, purchased Empire Ranch in 1876 from a Tucson businessman, Edward Fish, for $2000. There he built up a successful cattle ranching operation over the years to follow.

In 1879 Silver deposits were discovered on the ranch and by 1887 had yielded $500,000 that greatly aided in the expansion of the ranch. Tracks were being laid East of Tucson to extend the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1880. Walter dedicated land for the rail project. The railroad had the stop “Vail” named after him in recognition of his donation.

Total Wreck Silver Mine

The train stop grew up over the years to later be christened as a town in 1893. Ten years later in 1903 Vail School District was founded to serve the families in the Area. The first schoolhouse built on a knoll by Pantano Wash on a Ranch Called Rancho Del Lago.

Today 13,604 people call Vail, Arizona their home (2020 census). The local community has grown dramatically from the once sleepy train stop donated by Walter, Vail and his family. It’s more than just a cattle ranching operation. Tucson has grow to include all the big city Amenities while the city of Vail lays nestled between multiple nature preserves. It’s no wonder this is one of the most highly desired places to live in Arizona.
