Ruby is an abandoned Mining town under shadow of the Atascosa Mountains.
The Ghost Town is 5 miles as the crow flies from Mexico.
There is a lot of illegal trafficking in this area so be advised.
This area is regularly patrolled by Border Patrol as well as has a steady stream of recreational traffic.
The town has a full-time caretaker who lives on site and will collect a fee from you to view the property.
Ruby is actually private property.
A few individuals bought the town when the mining company closed up shop.
Now it is a hot spot for adventurers.
Be prepared
I would recommend going in the early morning.
Most of the drive is on a maintained dirt road.
I see cars back there but sometimes the road washes out so I recommend you take a truck.
The mid day can be quite hot depending on the time of year you go.
Take a picnic lunch and extra drinking water as there’s no potable water there.
Buy a gallon jug per person with you.
This area is well travelled but quite remote.
You’ll need cash as well to pay the fee at the site.
The fee is collected per person.

There are two man made lakes there, a result of mining activities.
I also understand there are many bats within the mine.
They won’t trouble you trust me.
The bird lovers probably trouble them more than anything.
I understand during certain seasons they leave the mine at night to catch bugs.
I don’t know of a more beautiful setting for a ghost town.
The old buildings, mining equipment, lakes, and mountains looming over head.
It’s absolutely stunning.
