Baby Elephant Head trail is a short drive from Green Valley / Sahuarita and the views are out of this world. The trail is a bit steep in places but short and easy hike for beginners.
Elephant head is a landmark in Southern Arizona. I learned you can hike up it but it’s a daunting granite mountain. A bit spooky for those vertically challenged (scared of heights). I learned there’s a smaller granite mountain called “Baby Elephant Head”. I decided to hike it and wasn’t disappointed. It’s worth EVERY step.

I did this hike by myself in a couple hours. It wasn’t too hard. The biggest challenge is finding the trail. It’s not maintained and there’s no marker for where you turn to go up the mountain.

You’ll be shocked at how stunning the views are for such a short hike. I went at sunset which was especially spectacular.
The main trailhead to Elephant Head Mountain is in Agua Caliente Canyon. You can typically get there in a car. However, is a dirt road so best in a truck or SUV.
I would take two liters of water and a bag lunch. Surprisingly the trail is well defined and easy to walk on.
Here is the path I took
There’s a forest service marker on North side of road about 100 ft west of the parking area HERE in Agua Caliente Canyon.
You’ll take Elephant Head Trail for about a kilometer at which point you’ll be on a saddle looking into Chino Basin.
The trail heads due west off up from the saddle. You can make out a trail heading up the hill there which I’ve LINKED HERE. That is the trail to Baby Elephant Head.
