This hike is a hike with phenomenal views that anybody can complete. It’s 2.3 mile 1,645 ft climb and breathtaking view.
Atascosa peak has been on my list of must hikes. We originally thought this trail lead to the peak but were incorrect, it leads to a lookout.

This trail is worth every step, despite it is not the peak. Views are out of this world. The vista is as good as Mount Wrightson which is over 3,000ft higher.

There is no defined trail to the Atascosa Peak though I would like to attempt it someday. From what I hear it’s a scramble to the top over boulders along the ridge between the lookout and peak.
Finding the trail
The trailhead we took is west of Pena Blanca lake off Ruby Road. You can likely make it in a car with decent clearance but an SUV would be prudent.
Most of the trail lacks tree cover except for short hike up above the ridge. You will need to bring plenty of water.
The temperature was a balmy 80 degrees. I carried two liters of water and went through one. You will also want to carry a bag lunch.
Hope to see you on the trail
I carry a 36L daypack on my hikes. I love my kit but it’s not the most important thing. Getting on the trail is. Feel free to drop me a line should you have any questions about basic supplies or this trail.
Also, let me know if you or a friend have been to the actual Atascosa Peak. I hope to make it up there someday but need to know a good route.
